Down Syndrome Victoria is committed to ensuring that schools supporting students with diverse needs and learning styles have access to strategies, resources and support.

What is the Education Support Service?

The Down Syndrome Victoria (DSV) Education Support Service is the only visiting teacher service available for students with an intellectual disability in Victoria.

Why engage the Education Support Service?

The service promotes an inclusive educational environment facilitating a better quality education for all children, and is instrumental in changing discriminatory attitudes.

The Education Support Service provides practical support and specialist information to assist the school to deliver appropriate pedagogy and curriculum to students with Down syndrome particularly during periods of transition and change.The Education Support Service will contribute to the strengthening of partnerships between the parents of children with Down syndrome and their school community.

What supports will the school receive?

Up to three school visits or online consultations (nine hours) and ongoing phone/email support provided throughout the year.The DSV consultant will collaborate with teaching staff to meet the specific needs of the school and student.

The ESS can provide: 

  • Classroom support

  • Sourcing of specialist resources

  • Positive Behaviour Support

  • Curriculum adjustment

  • Professional development

  • Assistance at SSG/PSG meetings

The Department of Education (DE) funds a limited number of ESS places for students transitioning within mainstream government schools. DSV can provide a limited number of additional ESS places once these places are filled and for all other students for an annual fee.

Registration will provide the school with access to the DSV Education Platform, which includes resources, training modules, a Community of Practice and more.

Positions are limited and will be filled in order of receipt of school registration and the parental consent form. Please complete and return the following form as soon as possible

Privacy Declaration

Down Syndrome Victoria will only collect information necessary for safe and effective service delivery. DSV will only use private and sensitive information for the purpose it was collected and will secure it safely. When information is collected, DSV will explain why it is being collected and how it is planned to be used. DSV will only take photos or videos of staff and students with full and voluntary consent. Additionally any photos or videos taken will only be used externally with permission.

Down Syndrome Victoria will not share information about the student without your knowledge and consent. This means informed consent for the sharing of information will be sought and respected in all situations unless:

  • we are obliged by law to disclose your information regardless of consent or otherwise;

  • it is unreasonable or impracticable to gain consent or consent has been refused: and

  • the disclosure is reasonably necessary to prevent or lessen a serious threat to the life, health and safety of a person or group of people

The Education Support Service requires the exchange of information to third parties. ESS reports can be requested from the school.
